10 Ancient Contraceptive Methods to Keep Your Vagina Healthy

Want sex but don’t want to have kids? Put poop in your vagina. Want to romp but having kids is too dangerous? Use lead in bed.

…At least that’s what our ancestors thought.

Ancient birth control may have been a necessary precursor to modern methods, but it still includes everything from methods that make you go “ouch!” to “what the hell were you thinking?!” After all, many of these methods were cribbed from ancient “medicine,” like “dancing to not get pregnant.”

Read on…I don’t know…masochistic joy?

1. Animal feces

Tied for first place in the “Oh my goodness!” category are the Ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians.

by using Alligator poop Pessaries. Ancient India is also included for its use of pessaries Elephant dung.

The thing is, changing vaginal pH is the concept behind some modern contraceptives (and poop probably does that, to some extent). But did anyone imagine that “what?!” moment when someone thought a steaming pile of poop was a good idea, and the look on the face of the first female test subject?

2. Honey and Acacia

At least some of the ancient Egyptian solutions didn’t involve bacterial infections…

They also used Honey, Acacia Leaves, and Cotton Wool Stop sperm. Then Acacia Gum (This is actually the modern ingredient in birth control jelly.) We also give them points for creativity. Honey and sodium carbonate A paste that can be placed into a woman’s vagina.

3. Pinegrass

The species of giant fennel is a cooler story…

The ancient Greeks and Romans used this plant primarily for cooking, but also for contraception. However, there was one major problem… it could only grow in a part of what is now Libya. They tried to grow it elsewhere, but were unsuccessful. This made it very rare.

It doesn’t matter whether it was actually useful or not – people believed it was a magical plant. Eventually, it became so rare that it was used as currency, worth more than even silver. So it’s no surprise that it went extinct long ago.

Side Note – Dry latex glue/resin is closely related to Silphium and is used in a similar way.

4. Queen Anne’s Lace

It is also known as wild carrot and is still used today as a contraceptive (especially in India). Even Hippocrates Talk about how awesome it is (at least these guys did one thing right in that department).

The ancient Chinese and Indians practiced “Keep the relationship” and”sexual intercourse prohibited”, which is just a fancy way of saying “try not to ejaculate.” We don’t know if this is more about avoiding having children, or if men are just trying to conserve their precious “yang energy.”

6. Metals and Poisons

  • The Chinese used oil and mercury (mercury, not the Xman kind) in their “Qian Jin” birth control pills to render women sterile. Or you could fry it with tadpoles and eat it as a post-sex antidote. (I swear, I can’t make this stuff up).
  • A Hippocrates Text On the Nature of Women Tell the ladies to have a cup of copper Salt dissolved in water (very dangerous).
  • Mercury, liquid lead, and arsenic (sometimes together) were prescribed by almost all ancient cultures. It can absolutely work as a contraceptive because it will damage your body and brain so badly that you can’t have kids or no one will want to have sex with you because you’re dying.

Can we say that boys and girls are “stingy”?

8. Oil

9. Pomegranate peel

Greek physician Soranus of Ephesus told women to grind fresh pomegranate peels, mix them with water to make a paste, and apply it to the vaginal lining. To increase vaginal vitality, he also said that adding oak gall, rose oil, and chewing gum could achieve the same effect…

fact – Oak galls are produced by gall wasps injecting chemicals into the fibers or leaves of the oak tree. They taste amazing.

10. Rock Salt

Don’t say we women don’t have a choice! Indian women long ago would either put smooth blocks of rock salt on top (at least I hope they did because it hurts!) or they could get fancier and add honey and/or ghee on top.

This tradition has continued from ancient India to the present day.

More old birth control pills – South African bean pods, willow, seaweed balls, rue, beeswax, mint, stone plates, animal balls, Blue cohosh, date palm, artemisia, cedar resin, balsam sap, and myrrh.
