Your Second Marriage: A Fresh Start Without Divorce

Lori and I kept seeing ads for Georgie and Mandy’s first marriage. Yes, I know why it’s called that. I still hate this title and what it implies.

That said, I want to talk to you about your second marriage. To the woman you now call your wife.

Lori and I have worked with couples who, if they had just gotten married, would have had a great marriage, just like the one they have now. They have both grown up, become better people, and can have great marriages. But neither or both of them are willing to let go of the past. They feel angry, hurt, or bitter about something that no longer happens. Often, such couples end up in an unnecessary divorce.

If this sounds like your marriage, consider agreeing to start over. You can have a vow renewal ceremony or just make your commitments in front of a few friends. Decide that nothing that happened during your “first marriage” will be part of your second marriage. If these things happen again, it’s a second marriage problem. Otherwise, you won’t discuss them, argue for them, and let them influence your behavior.

Give it a try because a second marriage without divorce is better for everyone!
