In some ways, Step 3 – making a decision, transferring our will and our lives into care when we understand God – is the first step in recovery. This is the first time we have been asked to do something. We are asked to “make a decision” and are about to accept and follow the higher powers of external assistance and guidance. Of course, many of us are on the “God” language ball about this step. The good news is, the last four words of Step 3, Just as we know Godprovides us with a lot of freedom. For example, a completely new concept of God can be developed, which does not have to be a spiritual entity. A popular option is to turn God into an abbreviation, shorten the orderly direction and provide guidance by recovered addicts, sponsors, therapists, and supportive family members.
