The belief in things bigger than us allows us to do what we say, and when we are tired, hurt or scared, we can move on while the challenge seems overwhelmed, and the route is totally uncertain.
One problem is that restorative and porn addicts sometimes take the center of the word “power greater than us” in step 2. Many of us immediately connect this language to God and organized religion in our childhood. For some of us, this is very helpful. For others, not many. The good news is that there is no right way to define “greater power than us.” It would be great if we chose to include a formal version of God and religion in our definition of “power greater than us.” If not, we can consider 12-step scholarships, loved ones and others who support us in recovery as this power.
