The ultimate goal of sexual recovery is learning to engage in sexual activity in a healthy, life-affirming way.
People unfamiliar with sex and porn addiction often assume that sexual abstinence, like drug and alcohol addiction, requires complete abstinence. This is not the case. Instead, recovering sex and porn addicts work with a 12-step sponsor or sex addiction treatment specialist to carefully determine which of their sexual behaviors are problematic and which are not. They then commit in a written sexual sobriety contract to only engage in sexual acts that are problem-free and permitted within the scope of that predetermined agreement. (With porn addiction, abstaining from porn altogether may be an aspect of sexual sobriety.)
