Well, at least there’s a virtual Shibuya Halloween
Shibuya’s famous Halloween celebrations were once a wild spectacle of costumes, chaos and crowds, but they’ve taken a dramatic turn. This year, Halloween makes its debut under strict rules Year-round alcohol ban in public places Around Shibuya Station, huge banners read “No Halloween Events on Shibuya Streets,” a clear warning: The infamous street parties that once defined the holiday are effectively gone forever.
Although physical gatherings are banned, revelers can still party in the virtual universe. From October 24 to November 30, the city will host a virtual Halloween extravaganza called “Virtual Halloween,” where users can navigate a faithfully recreated Shibuya streetscape and interact with other avatars. There will also be a full range of digital experiences such as live music, comedy, games and interactive live streaming. Although the event has been running for five years, organizers now stress it is an alternative to the orgy-hell scene that usually takes place during the Witching Hour on October 31: “Instead we want people to enjoy themselves in this safe space Fun,” a Shibuya Ward representative told NHK News.
As Shibuya pivots from the wild revelry of past years to virtual festival festivities, the question remains: Can the digital realm capture even a fraction of Shibuya’s legendary Halloween energy?

Weird space and major cooperation
Virtual streets won’t just be filled with pumpkins and ghosts – Shibuya’s Halloween Virtual World is partnering with five of Japan’s largest digital platforms, including αU Virtual World and STYLY, to create spooky Halloween-themed environments. Each platform will offer a unique digital space while maintaining a cohesive Halloween atmosphere. This is a large-scale collaboration supported by the Open Metaverse Network, the largest Metaverse Alliance in Japan.
Special Halloween content will also feature popular Japanese creators, including a cover of Junky’s hit song “Happy Halloween” by Kohanarum, an artist with over 637,000 YouTube subscribers. Additionally, digital artists from Stardust Records will host exclusive content, and avatar app Mirror Muse will offer limited-edition Halloween stamps.
Virtual Osaka, another virtual streetscape that replicates the bustling area surrounding the Dotonbori Glico Runner sign, also focuses on the upcoming Osaka Kansai Expo 2025, offering content showcasing the city’s vibrant culture.
How to Attend Shibuya’s Virtual Halloween Event
Compared to the carnival mayhem of Shibuya Halloween, metaverse is a very tame event; after you create and customize your avatar, you can roam freely, interact with other digital revelers using emoticons like raising hands, jumping, or clapping, and communicate via text or voice chat. The best part? There are no drinking restrictions in the virtual world, so even if you drink excessively, you can pass out in the comfort and safety of your home. This is a great option if you want to make sure you don’t wake up feeling ashamed or severely uncomfortable. However, if you’re looking for costumed mayhem, our list of alternative Halloween activities is here.
