Understanding the Therapeutic Process – Sexuality and Relationships

Go with the flow of nature. Her secret is patience.
When we begin treatment, sex and porn addicts often expect that the majority of our work in therapy or recovery will be focused on identifying and addressing childhood issues. This is not the case. While addressing early life trauma is often an aspect of treatment for sex and porn addicts, it is only one of many and is not usually an initial priority. Other issues, such as stopping problem behaviors, breaking through denial, and developing a basic understanding of addiction, are more important in the early stages of recovery. Once we have built and learned to implement the specific tools and life skills necessary to stay sober, our therapist may (if we so desire) explore issues typical of addiction, such as childhood neglect, abuse, and trauma. But this should not be pursued in depth until we are firmly established in our sexual sobriety.
