Tomb and chalice-shaped jar found in Petra’s treasury –
A tomb with 12 tombs was discovered in the Treasury building in Petra. Few complete tombs have been found in Petra—the constraints of urban space encouraged their continued reuse—and these still contain in situ articulated skeletons and grave goods, including a pottery vessel with a broken bowl that appears to What a coincidence. Like the Holy Grail discovered at the end of Indiana Jones Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade This was taken at the Treasury in Petra.
Archaeologists from the University of St Andrews have received rare permission from the Jordanian government to explore the Ministry of Finance building. They conducted geophysical surveys to assess the conditions in and around the Treasury. Electromagnetic conductivity and ground-penetrating radar scans revealed the existence of underground chambers. The team then mined precisely located areas in the scans.
Dating of pottery, sediments and organic material in and around the tomb indicates that the tomb walls were constructed between the mid-1st century BC and the early 2nd century AD. These are the first absolute date ranges for the vault’s construction.
Rose City’s striking monumental architecture was hewn from the red sandstone canyon walls between the late 1st century BC and the 2nd century AD, when it was the capital of the Nabataean kingdom. This building is known today as the Treasury, although it was definitely not built in the first century AD and was probably the tomb of King Aretas IV. The city was abandoned after an earthquake in the 7th century and was rediscovered in 1812 by Swiss explorer Johann Burckhardt.
Petra became a popular tourist destination after its rediscovery, and the Treasury is the most iconic representation of its rock architecture. It gained even greater international fame in the modern era when its dramatic appearance was used as the finale of Indiana Jones’s quest for the Holy Grail.

Professor Bates said: “It is a rare opportunity and a privilege to be able to survey such an iconic site and validate the geophysics through excavation so quickly. The scope of this discovery was so unexpected , but may shed light not just on the Treasury Building, but on Nabataean society as a whole.
Archaeologist Pearce Paul Creasman, executive director of ACOR, said: “We still have a lot to learn about the Treasury. When was this extraordinary building built and why? Little did we know that this excavation might revolutionize our With the support of the Jordanian government, this excavation brings us closer than ever to answers.”
The investigation and excavation was filmed for the two-part season premiere of “Uncharted,” which premieres October 9 on the Discovery Channel.
