The largest Roman shoe ever discovered is on display - History

The largest Roman shoe ever found was discovered in Magna Castle on Hadrian’s Wall in northern England in 2025 and will be on display at the Vindolanda Trust Roman Army Museum in Brampton, Cumbria. The new exhibition, which opens on February 7, will join a number of other large-scale footwear unearthed at the Roman fortress of Magna.

Magna is a smaller fortress located approximately seven miles west of the main fortress of Vindolanda, south of Hadrian’s Wall. Unlike Vindolanda, which has been regularly excavated for decades, Magna has only begun archaeological excavations in 2023. Excavations last summer uncovered 34 shoes ranging in size from children to adults. 8 of them are much larger than average, starting at 11.8 inches in length. The largest shoe is 12.8 inches long, equivalent to an American men’s shoe size 14. Michael Jordan wore a size 13.5, just to give you an idea of how big these shoes were.

Statistically speaking, the proportion of abnormally sized shoes is very large. Nearly 24% of the shoes Magna has found so far are oversized. Meanwhile, of the 5,000 shoes unearthed during 55 years of excavations at Vindolanda, only four or five fall into the extra-large category.

[Archaeologist Rachel Frame] Said, while it was clear that the leather shoes belonged to tall men, the mystery of why these men were stationed in the fort remained.

“We know that certain areas of the Roman world recruited specialized legions into their armies because they had special skills – whether it was horseback riding or archery,” she said.

“So we may have a more specialized unit on site [for whom] It’s advantageous to be taller,” she said.

Archaeologists hope that when excavations resume in April, artifacts unearthed may explain the intriguing swarm of soil grasshoppers. For example, if altars to gods, funerary reliefs, and inscriptions appeared to identify the legions stationed at the fort, it would explain why they might have been recruited for their above-average height.
