Helping out around the house is one of the easiest things a man can do to keep his marriage happy, a divorce lawyer has revealed.

“The spouse who never pitches in around the house often creates resentment in the other spouse,” Sarah Corcoran said in a TikTok video, and she’s witnessed many unhappy couples firsthand.

She warned: “You won’t end a marriage because of one incident that leads to a huge argument. It’s a slow process.”

In heterosexual relationships, approximately 70% of divorces in the United States are currently filed by women.

“I think marriage as an institution has been somewhat slow to meet expectations of gender equality,” Michael Rosenfeld, an associate professor of sociology at Stanford University, told the American Sociological Association.

“Wives still take their husbands’ last names and are sometimes forced to do so. Husbands still expect their wives to do most of the housework and childcare,” the professor explained.

That’s why Cochran specifically advises men to make sure they don’t leave their wives to complete every item on their to-do list alone.

“My advice to you is, if you want to stay married, empty the dishwasher once in a while,” Cochran said.

James Sexton, a world-renowned family attorney in New York City, has his own theory — and he revealed on his podcast that the two main reasons people get divorced are infidelity and money.

To avoid using Sexton’s services, he advises couples to really “focus” on each other.

Yet, compared with previous years, fewer people seem to need Cochrane and Sexton’s advice.

With weddings and dates put on hold for so long during the coronavirus pandemic, the number of couples legally splitting up has been decreasing – which seems to be a good thing about the lockdown.

The current marriage rate is reportedly still low compared to the past two decades – over the past two decades, the number of marriages has hovered around seven to eight couples per 1,000 people.

The divorce rate in 2022 was 2.4 per 1,000 people, down from 4 in 2000.

Experts say the increase cannot be attributed solely to the pandemic, explaining that current social and economic trends are changing the way people form and manage relationships.
