Before you can escape from prison, you must realize that you are locked up.
Addiction has nothing to do with happiness. Rather, they are about the secondary benefits of escape. Non-addicts drink alcohol, take drugs, and engage in potentially addictive behaviors (sex, porn, gambling, etc.) because these things are pleasurable in the first place. For non-addicts, pleasure is the main gain. Not so for addicts. we are more interested in quadratic gain of escape. For example, a normal, non-addicted person watches porn to experience a bit of sexual pleasure and release. Yet we watch porn for hours on end to escape the world and everything in it. We go back day after day looking for more of the same, looking for and finding the same secondary gains, and end up in an endless cycle of feeling bad, using porn to escape that feeling, and then feeling bad again – probably worse than before Because we did some regrettable things while acting. This leads to more porn (or whatever else we’re doing). This stagnation is the crux of our addiction.
today’s task
Think about how many times you have told yourself, I can only surf the Internet for a few minutesjust getting lost in sex for hours on end.
