Teenager mentions prosecutor after sushi condom prank
A 16-year-old boy, retained due to his age, was forwarded to prosecutors on Monday for a viral prank involving condoms involved in sushi restaurants. The incident occurred on March 28 at a branch of the Kura Sushi chain in Tashima Ward, Tokyo. According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, the teenager uploaded an image of an unpacked condom that his friend placed in a slot used to return to an empty plate on social media. It spread quickly, and in less than 24 hours it could see more than 100,000 views.
Kura Sushi Restaurant is forced to close briefly after condom prank
Online people quickly identified the restaurant and location. Kura Sushi then closed for a short period of time to disinfect all plates and cutlery while responding to inquiries about the incident. Police were contacted and the boy was charged with fraudulent means of obstructing business. He reportedly admitted the act and told police: “I wanted to see how my friend reacted. I posted it without considering the consequences.”
Several people went to X to criticize the teenager and his friends, including musicians and actor Gackt. “Ultimately, if you’re so obsessed with seeking recognition that you can’t see your stupidity, you’re missing out on the point,” said the former Malice Mizer singer. “I’m not saying you have to be a good shoe, but don’t be fools. And, condoms aren’t something you use in sushi restaurants. Didn’t you learn the right way to use it in school?”

Sushi Terrorism
This is not the only controversial incident in recent years, involving a high school student at a sushi restaurant chain. In January 2023, a video of a 17-year-old boy licking the open top of an open sauce bottle spread. After licking the top, he placed the edge of an unused teacup in his mouth. The teenager licked his fingers, which he then used to touch some sushi. The clip reportedly approached 40 million times on X (then called Twitter) before being knocked down.
Sushiro filed a lawsuit against the boy, paying about 67 million yen. It said the company’s customers dropped sharply due to the video. In late July, the two sides reached a settlement. That was one of many so-called “sushi terrorism” incidents that happened at that time. Others include customers who put Wasabi on sushi, designed to provide them to other customers. These incidents have caused public outrage and have negatively affected sales at conveyor belt sushi restaurants.
