Storing the vibrator and batteries

I bought my first vibrator! This is a bullet vibrator. I clean it before and after use and bought batteries for it, but how do I store the batteries when I’m not using the vibrator? I bought 1.5 V AAA alkaline batteries that I really like, but I can’t seem to find a way to store them, and I’m a little paranoid that it will short out. I put the new battery in a container but don’t know what to do with my used one (it’s not dead, I took it out of the bullet to extend its life). How to store used batteries?
