Once words are spoken, they can never be taken back.
Step 9 says that as part of our recovery, we should make restitution directly to the person we harmed whenever possible, unless doing so would harm them or others. It is important that the last part of this statement urges caution in approaching this step. The harm you have caused someone may be so severe that simply seeing you again would cause that person great pain. The person you have harmed may not be aware of your actions, and simply having them know would cause them great pain. It is also possible that approaching someone and admitting your actions could stir up a hornet’s nest and put your job, your family, or your freedom in jeopardy. In such cases, direct restitution should only be made after careful consideration by you and your sponsor, and in consultation with others who may have been affected, especially family members.
