Something new is coming to Tokyo in 2025

2025 will be a big year for Tokyo, with several landmark buildings set to open after years of development, including Tokyo Toyota Arena in Odaiba, Takanawa Gate City in Shinagawa Ward and Giant City Stadium in Inagi. This year will also be another big one for tourism, with the capital welcoming new luxury hotels such as the Fairmont, 1 Hotel Tokyo and JW Marriott.

TeamLab Toyosu expansion (January 2025)

teamLab Planets is a multimedia experience facility located in Toyosu. When it opened in 2018, it was originally scheduled to be open for a limited time only. However, eight years later, the facility is still going strong, with expansion planned this month. More than 10 new attractions will be available, including an area called “Athletics Forest.” Popular on-site restaurant Vegan Ramen Uzu Tokyo will also debut a dining space called “Looking Glass Table.”

Ginza Sony Park (January 26, 2025)

The former Sony Building in the heart of Ginza has unveiled a new look: Ginza Sony Park. Formerly an open space next to the Sukiyabashi intersection, the open space was dubbed “Ginza Garden” by Akio Morita, one of Sony’s founders, and Ginza Sony Park is designed to reflect this. It was intentionally built lower than surrounding buildings to maintain an “open” concept, and its exposed concrete design is rare in Ginza. It has already hosted events such as art exhibitions and pop-up shops, suggesting it will become a cultural hub for the area.

Toranomon Hills Glass Rock (Spring 2025)

The four-story glass rock building located in Tokyo’s newly developed Toranomon Hills will officially open in spring 2025. It is located between the station tower and the Sen Tower, greatly improving pedestrian movement from one point to the other. The complex includes three underground levels and a large T-shaped walkway.

Takanawa gateway city

Takanawa Gateway City (March 2025)

The Takanawa Gateway City development, located near Shinkawa, is expected to open in March 2025 and is said to be a step into the future. The 1.6-kilometer-long complex has three main buildings, including a cultural facility designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates. The cultural complex, called “MoN Takanawa: Museum of Narrative,” will open in spring 2026.

The area will also welcome Japan’s second JW Marriott hotel.

Tokyo Giants City Stadium (March 2025)

The Yomiuri Giants farm team’s new facility will be more than just a stadium and will host a host of events throughout the year. In addition to being used for official games of Eastern League farm teams, it will also host amateur baseball and women’s softball games. The space plans to host pop-ups and festivals during the off-season. The aquarium is expected to open in 2027.

Mitsui Shopping Park LaLa Terrace Kita Ayase (June 2025)

The new lifestyle shopping mall “Mitsui Shopping Park LaLa Terrace” will arrive in Tokyo in June 2025. With 50 different stores, including a supermarket on the first floor and a food court on the second floor, LaLa Terrace aims to be a shopping destination for local residents of Kita Ayase and the surrounding areas.

Tokyo Toyota Arena (Fall 2025)

In the fall, one of Tokyo’s largest arenas will open in Odaiba. Details are scarce at the moment, but the stadium, sponsored by car company Toyota, will focus on hosting major sporting events.

Of course, a new year means more new hotels, as Tokyo is more popular than ever with overseas visitors.

Hotel Tokyo 1 (Fall 2025)

American sustainable luxury lifestyle hotel brand 1 Hotels is coming to Japan to open its first hotel as part of the Akasaka World Gate project in Minato-ku, Tokyo. From design to layout and culture, the brand concept of “living in harmony with nature” will be reflected.

Osika (Spring 2025)

Stay in rooms designed in your favorite colors at Ocica, a stylish business hotel by R Hotels & Resort Management. The hotel in Oshiage will open in the spring, near the Tokyo Skytree. Guests can choose from eight different colors for their room.

Fairmont Hotel (July 2025)

Luxury hotel brand Fairmont will enter the Japanese market for the first time in July 2025. Located on the top floor of the Blue Front Shibaura South Tower, the hotel will have 219 rooms from the 35th to 42nd floors. The famous bed scene between John Lennon and Yoko Ono took place at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal.
