Self-care is crucial to recovery.

Listening to our bodies, developing healthy habits, and maintaining realistic personal and time boundaries are important aspects of healthy, conscious living. Stephen Covey popularized this self-care principle in his book, Seven Habits of Highly Effective Peopleabout a lumberjack who works tirelessly all day chopping down trees, spending more time and energy than his colleagues who stop every now and then to sharpen their saws. Nowhere is this story needed more than in addiction recovery. As recovering addicts, we often think we have to constantly fight our addiction to the exclusion of everything else. Socializing and having fun seem to make us let our guard down, begging for a relapse. However, the opposite is true. Taking a few minutes to meditate, exercise, socialize, or just have some fun is not a waste of time when you are struggling with addiction. We are just honing our recovery tools.
