Remote Control Toys

I looked at remote control toys a few years ago. We usually live miles apart. We bought one but it required both parties to open an app which felt complicated and silly. We spent more time troubleshooting and setting it up than using it each time. Any recommendations for a toy that can be activated randomly and at any time just by turning it on?
