Prepare for Life’s Storms: Marriage Emergency Preparedness

Prepare for Life’s Storms: Marriage Emergency Preparedness

We lost power just after 8pm last Tuesday night. We restored power 33 hours later.

We live in the mountains and have a lot of trees near power lines, so storms and wet snow can be a problem. There are only a few dozen homes here, so our priority is low. It’s been a while since we’ve been outside for more than 24 hours, but we lose power a dozen or more times a year. Three and a half days was our record.

After a few minutes, when it became clear that this was not temporary, the three men on the property sprang into action. The circuit breaker opens, the generator starts, and our lives go on. We can’t do everything at once, but we can get by just fine, including internet access and hot showers.

Most of you don’t have generators, home batteries, and backup propane heat. Most of you really don’t need these things. We have them because not having them can be an inconvenience that can cause serious problems depending on the time of year and when the power goes out. We work from home and must have internet. This time of year, a day without heat can make our homes uncomfortable and nearly uninhabitable.

You cannot prepare for every possible emergency. But smart people understand the problems that may arise and prepare for these things.

This idea should apply to our marriages as well. Things will vary from one couple to another. If your wife has mental health issues, you may also have issues that others don’t. The same goes for physical health issues. If she works outside the home, losing her job and income could become an emergency. etc.

Some things will cause inconvenience, and some things may cause disaster. How likely something is to happen and how bad it might be should inform your worries and preparations.

It’s not fun to think about what might go wrong in your marriage, but doing so can mean the difference between a bump in the road and a threat to your marriage.
