Physical safety

I’m relatively new to toys. I’ve been using “entry level” dildos for about a year but have recently started wanting to try something different. I just bought a different, better textured dildo. I knew nothing about the different materials and had no idea that dildos that weren’t technically body safe would even be sold (my naivety). My first dildo was made of TPE and I found people had mixed opinions about it. My newest dildo is made of PVC and I think it’s terrible 😭 Honestly, I don’t want to throw it away since it’s not cheap and it’s brand new. However, I want to be safe. After some research, my idea is to try a non-lubricated condom and add my own water-based lube to the outside. Can anyone with experience tell me how they would do this? I’ll definitely be careful with future purchases.
