News in bottles found behind the stage crown
Now open the information in a bottle found behind the gorgeous plaster crown hidden above the stage of the Kings Theater of Edinburgh, which has been opened, revealing a complete list of crew members in the 1906 manufacturing of the theater.
Last December, you expected to reach his hand over a gap above a large plaster crown, which was discovered last December, where there might be something cool: historians, photographers at the History Theater and long-time donors at the Kings Theater Mike Hume. His father worked there when he was a child.
The theater is currently underway for a $50 million restoration work and is covered with scaffolding, giving selected visitors the opportunity to see a portion of Baroque-style buildings that are not normally visible, let alone accessible. Hume was on a private tour of the theater customers when he found himself on the top of a 40-foot-plus-stage satellite arch. In the impulse, any history nerd could fully understand, he fell into the gap behind the crown and fished outside the peel fragments and dust rabbits. He touched something solid and grabbed it. Only when he withdrew his hand did he see that his prize was a glass bottle with a roll of paper inside.
The bottle top is fully covered and the plaster is encapsulated on the bottle shoulder. When the bottle is hidden behind the crown, it has been immersed in the wet gypsum to seal it, so it is impossible to delete the message immediately. The year of “1906” written on paper is clearly seen through transparent glass.
Protectors at Scottish Conservation Studios were able to remove the seal and open the cap, but they thought it was too risky to move the paper away through the slim bottleneck. After the Treasure Unit in Scotland determined that the Kings Theatre owned the artifact, the bottle was transferred to the Edinburgh Academy of Art, where glass technicians were able to cut the bottom of the bottle with fine diamond blades. They were able to see the October 1906 date (two months before the theater opened), which was a list of names, but the folded and rolled paper was glued to themselves in some places, so it was necessary for paper expert Helen Creasy, who was in the Scottish Conservation Studio to treat it before it could be undamaged. Then, starting with building contractor WS, the complete list of names was revealed [William Stuart] Cruikshank & Son, followed by architects John D. Swanston and James Davidson, clerk of John Tulloch, drafters John A. Cameron, Foreman Plasterer George King, Jnr.
The BBC News hired a family tree service to study the names on the list and handed over information about workers’ history and families to the theater. When the theater reopens in 2026, bottles and notes will be on display in a new exhibition space dedicated to the history of the theater.
