New York Singles Dish Why This Sunday Is the Biggest Singles Dish Online

With the new year comes new ways to swipe — and the fact that this Sunday is the busiest day of the year for online dating makes perfect sense for these New York singles.

“It’s kind of like, ‘I want to change my life. I just hugged a random stranger on New Year’s Eve and it felt awkward because I didn’t have anyone.'” West Village comedian and Hinge user Jared Fried says Jared Freid, whose stand-up special “Jared Freid: 37 and Single” is now streaming on Netflix.

“Also in January, there’s not a lot going on, fewer events, fewer happy hours, no holiday parties. So you’re like, ‘How am I going to fill this time?'”

Dating apps report a sharp increase in matches and messages on “Dating Sunday,” the first Sunday of the year.

On Hinge, “Date Sunday” last year saw a 27% increase in likes and a 29% increase in messages compared to an average Sunday.

The number of league messages increased by 38% and the number of games increased by 53%.

Stephanie Kiser of Astoria, host of “Hinge” and “The League,” said the surge is understandable now that the holidays are over.

“I don’t use apps as much during November and December because it’s the busiest time of the year. Then January comes and it’s like, ‘Oh, my God,'” she told Washington Post.

Jade Shenker, who got divorced early last year, believes time spent with family during the holidays can also put single people in the mood for love.

“It . . . draws you into thinking about these things, sharing these moments with someone,” she said.

Danny Mondello, who lives in Brooklyn, sees the appeal of Sunday swiping.

“Sunday is known as a chill day, a day where you stay home and hang out with… your significant other. I think if you don’t have a significant other, you use Sunday to find that one people,” he said.

“Most people stay home on Sunday, hungover, at least I do.”

Erika Ettin, a Brooklyn-based online dating coach, says “Date Sunday” is a perfect storm.

“Historically, Sunday has been the busiest day for online dating, probably because a great way to overcome Sunday dreads is to distract yourself with the hope of meeting your partner. Add to that a New Year’s resolution, and you’ve got With Date Sunday,” she said.
