New research finds attractiveness is not all about appearance
Sorry, handsome guy, this is not your appearance.
A recent study published in the British Journal of Psychology shows that it is not just facial features that make a person attractive—it is a mix of common features, personal tastes, and even like the way someone moves, smells or speaks.
Scientists initially found that people tend to prefer symmetrical faces, average appearance characteristics and signs of “bioadaptive” – basically traits that suggest healthy and good genes.
But now, experts find that attraction is more than just a pretty face.
To obtain the full picture, the researchers studied characteristics beyond the body, such as sound, body movement and body odor, which can affect a person’s attraction.
The international team of researchers recruited 61 participants who provided photos, videos, voice recordings and even body odor samples (collected by having the participants wear sweat pads while exercising).
By separating these senses, researchers can figure out which senses are most important and how they overlap.
When viewing each attribute individually, a person’s voice is the best indicator of their attractiveness.
At the same time, the weakest connection is between body odor and a person’s appearance.
All of this is saying that even if you don’t believe in your appearance, people will still find reasons why you are attractive.
And, if you’re still suspicious – psychologists reveal these five signs that you’re more attracted to you than you think.
“When a person sees you, people raise their eyes,” said mental health professional Francesca Tighinean in the Trend’s Tiktok video.
“This is called a brow glitter, which can be a subconscious mind of interest or conspiracy.”
The Tiginian continues, “two, others do everything they can to help you”, which is called the “halo effect” and happens because “attraction is related to positive qualities.”
“We tend to be more subconsciously friendly and generous in people who we find attractive,” the expert said.
You might assume that people would appreciate someone who is attractive – but it is not usually the case
“You rarely appreciate the look,” she said. “That’s because people think you’ve realized your appeal, so they don’t need to remind you.”
The Tiginian added: “Four, strangers are staring at you – people tend to keep longer, more frequent eye contact with people who find attractive.”
The fifth and final sign is “people are surprised by your insecurity.”
“This reaction usually shows that they see you more positively than you think you are,” she said.
