To have and to hold whether you remember it or not, in sickness and in health.
A Utah couple’s love story includes a breakup, a dramatic accident, memory loss and a heartfelt reunion, with many netizens likening it to something out of a Hallmark movie.
Jenna Brotherson married her now-husband Mitchell seven months after their split, but only because a concussion made him forget they weren’t together.
“When people ask us about our love story, that’s our favorite part of telling it,” she said.
Jenna and Mitchell, now 27, had been friends for several months before they started dating.
But in February 2020, Jenna called off her relationship with her then-boyfriend because she was “feeling overwhelmed with life.”
The next day, Mitchell attempted a flip while skiing at Beaver Mountain in Utah, passed out, and woke up as paramedics rushed him to the hospital.
He suffered a severe concussion and immediately called Jenna to ask her to pick him up since he couldn’t drive.
“I’m like, ‘Why is he texting me this? I just broke up with him,” Jenna recalled in a video posted on TikTok.
It turns out that Mitchell’s concussion made him forget they had gone their separate ways.
“Mitch kept messaging me after the concussion and trying to hang out, and I was confused as to why he would continue to message me since we had broken up,” she told People.
“I thought maybe he was really serious about staying friends. Even when I told him I was having a rough day with my roommates, he came and brought us ice cream.”
Jenna quickly realized she had made a mistake by ending her romance with Mitchell and appreciated the “kindness and thoughtfulness” he continued to show.
“I was so nervous that I had to swallow my pride and ask him if he wanted to date again,” Jenna recalled of receiving a text from Mitchell on the day she returned from spring break asking to hang out.
When Jenna finally asked him to get back together, she realized he had no idea they weren’t together.
She recounted their breakup, and while Mitchell did remember talking to her in the car that day, he couldn’t remember the content of the conversation.
“He thinks it’s really funny and I’m relieved. It makes getting back together so easy because as far as he’s concerned, we’ve never been together!” Jenna shared.
Five months later, the two were engaged. Less than three weeks later, they were married on September 4, 2020.
“In my husband’s speech, he mentioned not the breakup but how grateful he was that it all worked out in the end,” Jenna said.
