Kobe: Nagomibar

Nagomibar is a small club with a lot of love. Unlike many other venues, it doesn’t stick to one genre. One night you might be enjoying local hip-hop acts like Hyunis1000 and Caroline, while the next you’re enjoying dance music from Tokyo DJs. Its “if we dig it, it goes away” policy has fostered a wonderful community of music lovers. Staff are just as likely to hit the dance floor as patrons.

Kyoto: West Harlem

West Harlem is a small dance music club with a capacity of 200 people. It has no sign on the door and is deliberately hidden in plain sight. It’s located in Kyoto’s main tourist area and is surrounded by upscale tourist traps and fake torii gates, but don’t let that put you off. West Harlem is home to some of the friendliest people you will ever meet, who welcome any keen dancer with a big smile. Enjoy its impressive sound system as you dance the night away. The club is allowing re-entry, so head to Kamogawa to take a break and enjoy the beautiful views.

Osaka: Compufunk Records

Compufunk Records is a unique Osaka experience. A record store by day, the second-floor venue welcomes DJs and dancers at night, with past guests including Kuniyuki Takahashi and Luca Lozano. Despite its popularity among locals and tourists, it still feels like a hidden gem. Don’t miss the chance to dance on the creaky wooden floors.
