Live-action color movies announced by global drama

Bandai Namco Filmworks and Legendary Entertainment have signed a joint investment contract to accommodate the iconic Gundam franchise, which is scheduled for a global drama release. The project is tentatively set to be “Gundam” and is directed by Jim Mickle, known for his work as “sweet food”.

The partnership was finalized in January 2025 and marks the first live adaptation of the Gundam series that has generated over 140 billion yen in annual revenue through various media and merchandise. Legendary pictures will take the lead in making.

International expansion

To support the development of films and wider overseas expansion, Bandai Namco will establish a new North American subsidiary, Bandai Namco Filmworks America. This new entity will and focus on expanding licensing operations and enhancing the global value of the Gundam brand.

Jim Mickle will serve as both director and screenwriter of the project. Although specific plot details remain, the adaptation will draw on the rich Gundam Universe, which, when first aired in 1979, described as military weapons and complex human dramas with its realistic mobile lawsuit.

Since its debut, the franchise has produced 25 TV animation series, 34 drama versions and 27 OVA champions, creating a dedicated international fan base. The live-action adaptation is designed to bring this vast universe to global audiences through the big screen.
