Just getting treatment is not enough

Accepting help doesn’t mean you’ve failed; it means you’re no longer alone.
Often, recovery from sex and pornography addiction presents challenges that cannot be resolved with individual, one-on-one therapy alone. In fact, if we want to permanently change our ingrained behavior patterns, we almost always need external reinforcement and support. Twelve-step groups are very helpful in this regard. During these sessions, we learned that our problems were not unique, which went a long way toward reducing the shame associated with our behaviors. Twelve-step meetings are also an ideal place to confront and overcome denial. When we share, peers in recovery let us know through their reactions whether we are grounded in reality or still living in denial. We can also learn from the experiences of others what interventions and coping mechanisms work best. Most importantly, we learned that many caring people can provide helpful support and guidance, not just a primary therapist or accountability partner.
