Japan’s most beautiful floating torii gate
Across Japan, some “floating” torii gates appear to rise from the sea or stand gently on lakes. Their character changes with the tides and the time of day – sometimes brooding and still, sometimes surrounded by waves or mist. Below, you’ll find some worth looking for.

Hakone Shrine in Kanagawa Prefecture
The Heiwa Torii of Hakone Shrine is located on the shore of Lake Ashi and is one of the most photo-worthy spots in Japan. If you arrive during rush hour, you may have to queue for a long time to take a photo under it. Despite being a popular tourist destination, it still gives off a sense of tranquility and awe. The gate stands on the water’s edge, the forest presses in from behind, and the lake stretches toward the horizon.
Many visitors come to snap classic photos, but it’s worth taking the time to wander the forested shrine complex surrounding the torii gate, which dates back to the eighth century and contains several historic affiliated shrines.

Itsukushima Shrine, Hiroshima Prefecture
The torii gate of Miyajima Itsukushima Shrine is one of the most photographed symbols of Japan, and rightfully so. Since the 1600s, it has been considered one of Japan’s three greatest landscapes. Originally built in the sixth century and rebuilt several times, the majestic gate rises from the heights of Setouchi and stands in stark contrast to the surrounding mountain scenery.
At high tide, it appears to be spiraling; at low tide, visitors walk across the ocean floor and stand under the giant pillars. The island itself is equally worth a look, with its walking trails to Mount Misan, peaceful shrine buildings built on the water, and deer drifting around town. If possible, stay overnight. As day trippers depart, lanterns flicker along the shoreline, creating a peaceful and ethereal atmosphere.

Saga Prefecture Ou Shrine
Ou Shrine is located in Taira Town, Saga Prefecture. It is famous for its charming and mysterious place: because it has the largest tidal range in Japan, it is said to be the place where you can most clearly feel the power of the moon. The three torii gates of Ou Shrine extend into the Ariake Sea in a striking formation.
This is perhaps the best place to admire the town’s famous tidal fluctuations. At low tide, visitors can walk directly to the gate through wet sand and stones; at high tide, they seem to emerge from the sea in the distance.

Sakurai Shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture
The dazzling white torii gate of Sakurai Shrine stands out from the blue sea, giving a stunning visual effect. Behind it stands the famous Marriage Rock – the “Wedding Rock” tied with rope. The name refers to the way they look like a loving couple clinging to each other, and they are said to represent the Shinto gods Izanagi and Izanami. Therefore, this holy place is considered particularly auspicious for matters related to love.
Futamiura Beach, where the shrine is located, is very close to Fukuoka City and can be easily reached in a day trip. Known for its relaxed atmosphere and trendy cafes, it is also recognized as one of the country’s 100 best beaches, and one of the 100 best sunset spots.

Shiga Prefecture Shirasu Shrine
Shirahige Shrine is located on the west shore of Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake, and its offshore torii gate is famous for its tranquil beauty. It’s a simple yet stunning view: a door, open water, no competing buildings on the horizon. This shrine is dedicated to longevity, and its name means “white beard,” alluding to the ancient patron saint.
Sunrise is the most atmospheric time to visit. At this time, the shadow of the archway is often clearly reflected on the lake surface, making it look like a double one. Since Biwa is surrounded by bike paths and lakeside inns, the location fits naturally into wider itineraries, especially those linking Shiga and Kyoto.

Oarai Isozaki Shrine, Ibaraki Prefecture
Kamiiso Torii is located on the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture facing the Pacific Ocean. It stands on a rocky shelf where the waves are constantly pounding. Unlike the calm water settings of Hakone or Biwa, the gate’s character is shaped by movement and force – it stands dramatically against the rugged coastline, with waves crashing at its base.
Sunrise is the peak hour; photographers often gather before dawn to wait for the sun to rise directly behind their doors. A short walk inland brings you to the main shrine buildings, which all share a distinctive feature: the shrine houses frog statues instead of the traditional guardian poodle.
