A new era of Japanese animation
Prerequisites and significance
“Twins hinahima” follows the first grade twins and looks unique – wife and sister Himari (with gray hair) and sister Hinana (with red hair). The siblings attended a high school in Tokyo and dreamed of popping up on Tiktok, eagerly shooting dance videos and trending content. But their social media desires change unexpectedly when they notice strange anomalies that lead them into the mysterious world.
Throughout the animation process, AI technology is used extensively, which makes this production unique. According to Kaka Creation’s research starting in January 2025, this represents the first Japanese anime to incorporate AI technology into its creations, which has the potential to set new standards for animation production in the country.
Bridge technology and art
The project is part of a program that explores how AI and creative talent coexist in the entertainment industry. After the TV debut, the series will begin at noon on March 30, including a host of streaming platforms including Danime Store, Abema, TVER, MBS Video ISM, DMMTV and Prime Video.

The technology behind the animation
“Supportive AI” concept
At the heart of the “twin hinahima” is the concept of “supportive AI”, which uses artificial intelligence as an aid to creators rather than alternative talent. This philosophy envisions AI as a means to improve the productivity of animation while simultaneously realizing new forms of artistic expression, which might otherwise be impractical or impossible.
“The ‘supportive AI’ concept emphasizes that AI should complement the skills of human artists, not replace them,” explains Ultra-Noob, the project’s technical director. “Our goal is to expand the possibilities of creativity while retaining the human style that makes anime unique.”
Technological innovation and visual elements
Production teams use AI to overcome traditional animation limitations, especially in scenarios where a lot of labor is often required. For example, complex hair movement animations that are often simplified in regular anime have been implemented with AI aid due to production costs and time constraints, resulting in more natural and smoother character movements.
This technical approach allows the use of traditional methods to obsolete or expensive visual expression, thus opening up new aesthetic possibilities for the medium. The team focused on creating animations that make the artistic tradition of Japanese anime innovative and authentic.
Balance technology and human creativity
Despite the important role of artificial intelligence, production maintains a critical balance between technical assistance and human artistry. AI tools help generate initial animation elements and backgrounds, while professional animators and artists make the final improvements and ensure quality meets industry standards.
This hybrid approach preserves the unique style and emotional resonance characteristics of Japanese animation while leveraging technology to improve productivity and creativity. The results are designed to demonstrate how AI can become a broad tool for human creativity, rather than reducing the role of artists.
Address copyright and legal considerations
In developing this groundbreaking approach, the production team has carefully taken care of legal and ethical considerations. The creation process complies with the “AI Business Guide” of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Trade and Industry of Japan and has been developed with legal counsel to ensure compliance with current Japanese copyright laws.
This serious approach demonstrates the team’s commitment to building responsible practices for implementing AI in the creative industry, which, as technology continues to evolve, may be models for future production.
“Twin Hinahima” premiered on MBS on March 29, 2025 and is streamed on major platforms including the Danime Store, Abema, Tver and Prime Video.
