“I am here today to talk about a lie…I’d like to talk specifically about the lie or the idea that being a sex object is empowering.”

In this TEDx talk, Dr. Caroline Heldman argues that American culture has led many of us to falsely believe that being a sex object is empowering. To the contrary, she cites research showing that seeing oneself as an object is linked to far more negative than positive outcomes, ranging from poor body image to low self-esteem to diminished sexual pleasure.
