Viral fame—or viral shame?

Laina Morris, the former YouTuber behind the “overly attached girlfriend” meme, recently revealed how her viral fame has affected her dating life.

Speaking on the What If podcast, Morris admitted “it’s a challenge” while hosting Tommy Bowe.

The 33-year-old said he was shocked when a date once showed him the meme, replying: “That’s… you? “

After that, her date became “extremely awkward” and rudely started texting people to share the news and searching for her online while they were sitting together.

Eventually, the party “ended early,” with the person telling her, “I can’t believe I just went on a date with my ‘overly attached girlfriend.'”

Luckily, after more than a decade of viral fame, Morris only has one bad experience to share.

The 33-year-old said dealing with a toxic girlfriend used to “be a problem”.

Morris became an internet celebrity in 2012 when she entered a contest hosted by Justin Bieber and submitted her version of the video for his hit single “Boyfriend.”

In the video, she stares wide-eyed into the camera, barely blinking for much of the video — a frantic look that helped the video go viral — and performs her song from the stalker’s perspective.

Eventually someone took a screenshot of a nervous Morris, and people started adding the funny captions an overly attached girlfriend might say, like “Can we leave the lights on tonight? I want to be able to watch you sleep.” and “Find your porn magazine. Cut out all the faces and put mine in.”

Her internet fame has helped her land deals with major brands, including Kia, and book spots on major shows like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

However, becoming a viral sensation is strange.

“It’s definitely weird…but fun. I really enjoy it,” Morris told Business Insider in 2013. “It’s weird when I go on Pinterest or Reddit myself and just browse and then there I am.”

Morris’ meme isn’t the only time someone’s viral fame has complicated their relationship status.

Last year, an OnlyFans model was criticized after posting a video of her dancing next to her much older boyfriend’s hospital bed, joking: “I’ve made a will, should I pull the plug?”
