How a handshake reveals surprising insights into your gender

A great sex life is in your hands.

A new study on the relationship between sex, love and upper body strength suggests that first impression – your handshake – can reveal key details about your personal life.

The study, published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior, reviewed people’s grip strength, a common measure of upper body strength, and investigated responses related to sexual behavior.

Researchers at Washington State University analyzed data from 4,316 U.S. adults obtained from the 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to come up with the results.

Studies have found that stronger men are more likely to be in long-term relationships and have more sexual partners than their peers.

Meanwhile, stronger women are more likely to have a longer list of sexual partners than their weaker peers. However, strength did not appear to affect the length of women’s past relationships.

Experts have long believed that male strength is a sign of evolution, as men compete with each other to obtain a mate – survival of the fittest.

Another theory is that stronger men make better partners because they can hunt for meat while women care for their children, especially during pregnancy and infancy.

“People have a number of assumptions about male sexuality and its relationship to evolution,” lead author and anthropologist Carolyn Smith said in a statement to Phys.org.

“In addition to acquiring more sexual partners, establishing long-term relationships may have been important for men throughout evolutionary history.”

However, why women’s strength affects their sex lives remains a mystery.

“On average, men are stronger than women, men have more lifetime partners than women, but men and women are on the same regression line,” says Ed Hagen, an evolutionary anthropologist at Washington State University.

“For both men and women, stronger individuals had more lifetime sexual partners. This was a surprising finding and somewhat contrary to the sexual selection hypothesis.”

Men’s hands may determine more than just their sexual history.

A new app claims to be able to accurately predict the size and shape of a man’s penis, as well as potential sexual compatibility, using only photos of men’s hands.
