Here’s everything you need to know

JR East New Suica

JR East has unveiled plans to revamp its existing services over the next decade, a move it calls the “Suica Renaissance.” The company intends to turn its Suica service, currently a transportation card, into a digital platform that goes well beyond its current role, including payment services.

Here’s a detailed look at the changes ahead.

Contactless ticket gate

Say goodbye to the days of fumbling for cards at the door. JR East is developing pedestrian ticket gates and ticketless stations that use location data for entrance. Users don’t even need to have their cards or devices ready—just walk in.

Subscription service

The new Suica app will allow customers to join the subscription service and save up to 50% on train fares for the month.

Payment platform

By fall 2026, the Mobile Suica app will be updated to a fully integrated payments app that can be linked directly to your bank account or credit card. This means you’ll be able to use it for things like online shopping and pay in stores using its QR code. It will also remove the pre-recharge limit – you no longer have to wait at the gate and frantically recharge your Suica to get through!

Lots of coupons and transfers

Much like the Japanese PayPay app, Suica aims to be able to transfer money between accounts and even offer coupons for linked services.

area expansion

Currently, a person needs several different train tickets to travel across Japan, but JR East plans to abolish this system. By 2027, areas such as Tokyo, Sendai, Niigata and Aomori will be integrated into a complete region, allowing long-distance travel from Tokyo’s Ueno to Sendai Prefecture. In areas where Suica is not yet available, users will be able to access a “smartphone commuter card”.

New welcome for tourists Suica

The “Welcome Suica Mobile” app will be launched in March 2025, allowing overseas visitors to download the app, top up, and enjoy seamless travel upon arrival at Narita or Haneda Airport.
