Sometimes it’s okay to say, “Not my circus, not my monkeys.”
Healthy boundaries are not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Boundaries that are helpful in some relationships can be very unhelpful in others. Recognizing this, recovering addicts are often advised to answer the following questions before attempting to define and implement boundaries: “Does this problem (whatever it is) need to be solved?” and “Does this problem need to be solved?” by meor does it belong to someone else? ” Almost always, the answer to the first question is yes, and the answer to the second question is no. So, many times, taking back our desire (and attempts) to control other people’s behavior is the best boundary we can set . Of course, if the other person is out of control and unable to make rational decisions, we may step in and offer help, however, before doing so, we should express our feelings to our therapist, our 12-step sponsor, and our friends in recovery. “good intentions”.
