Two people were injured Tuesday night in a bear attack at a supermarket in Gunma Prefecture. One shopper was reportedly attacked inside the store and another was attacked in the parking lot. According to NHK, the bear is an adult bear, about 1.4 meters long, rushing around the fish and sushi areas. It is said that there were more than 30 customers in the store at that time. The two men were allegedly injured mildly.

“The bear seemed confused to me. It stayed in the store for 10 to 15 minutes,” said the supermarket manager. A shop employee called the local fire department and reported that a bear had scratched a man. At around 7:30 p.m., the police also received a call that a bear was pressing on a customer. The bear finally escaped.

Akita Bear Attack

Earlier in the day, a farmer in Wuchengme City, Akita Prefecture was attacked by a bear. At about 8 a.m., he called the police and said the carnivorous mammal bit him in his yard. The man suffered minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital. About an hour after the incident occurred in the farmer’s garden, a bear was seen in the yard of his next neighbor. Later that night, the local hunters association caught two bears nearby.

This year, Akita Prefecture reported several incidents involving bears. On September 22, an 80-year-old woman was scratched by a bear on her face while walking alone in Daguan City. Although her injuries were not life-threatening, they were very serious, including a fractured nose. The next day, a man in his 60s collided with a bear while riding a bicycle in Wuchengmu. He fell down and hit his shoulder hard. Akita Prefecture officials issued a warning to Asian black bears in the area.

A woman in her 70s in Miyagi Prefecture was attacked by a bear while picking mushrooms last Friday. Another woman who was walking with her was still missing. Also last Friday, the body of a 78-year-old man was found in the mountains of Oku Village, Nagano Prefecture. Several claw marks were found on his face and neck, believed to be caused by bears. Like the women in Miyagi, he went out to pick mushrooms.
