Over time, perseverance is what separates a productive life from a purposeless one.

Research shows that when kids are praised for working hard, they perform better than kids who are praised for winning, being smart, or other reasons. So, for kids, the positive message should be more about hard work than success. Understanding the value of hard work helps kids develop a grit that will serve them well throughout their lives. The same is true for addicts. As recovering addicts, we need to understand that the key to lasting sobriety is putting in the effort—following the 12 steps, addressing painful underlying issues, and surrounding ourselves with people who are just as hardworking.
