Fran Drescher is a fan of “Sleep Divorce” – Why
The babysitter is making laws – it’s time to get sleep divorced.
Fran Drescher, 68, is the latest star in the growing trend of embracing couples to sleep in different rooms, declaring that she doesn’t want to “someone sleeps in my bed in my bed, once again.”
“It’s not that I don’t like being close to a man, but to me, ‘You come, you go!’ Literally,” the sitcom told people. “Now is the time for me to relax and find peace.”
She is not alone. According to a 2025 survey by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), nearly one-third of Americans sleep separately from their partners.
Among millennials, that number jumped to nearly 40%.
“As clinicians, we have seen our patients and their spouses become more intentional about their sleep environment when trying to improve their sleep health,” Dr. Seema Khosla, a pulmonary scientist and AASM spokesman, said in a statement.
Because let’s face it – it’s hard to get your eight-hour beautiful sleep when your partner hits Nor like a chainsaw, or pierce the lid on it at 3 a.m.
And most Americans aren’t even close. A 2024 Gallup poll found that only 26% of people received advice to shut up, while more than half said that rest would feel better.
By choosing to sleep alone, people can customize their sleep settings without having to accommodate their partner’s preferences.
“When couples sleep in separate rooms, they are able to control the temperature and environment of their sleeping areas, which leads to greater comfort while getting good night’s rest,” said Dr. Rana Ali, a sleep medicine expert.
Sleeping separately also reduces the number of interruptions that will shock you or your partner to wake up.
“I don’t want to worry about me disturbing another person,” Dresser said. “I want to be able to play TV or lights anytime, anywhere.” ”
Ali explained that uninterrupted sleep is essential because it allows our bodies to rest and recharge, thus giving us the energy and focus we need to motivate all day.
Losing even 1.5 hours of sleep at night can affect how you feel, leading to short-term problems such as lack of alertness, brain fog, depression and difficulty in engaging in daily activities.
As time goes by, the consequences only get worse.
“During insomnia, hidden health hazards accumulate and cannot be reversed with concealer or caffeine,” said Dr. Nancy Foldvary-Schaefer, a sleep medicine expert, on behalf of the Cleveland Clinic.
“Everything from the cardiovascular system to the immune system can have an impact,” she continued.
Research has found that people who often sleep less than seven hours are more susceptible to diseases such as the common cold as the body’s ability to fight infections and inflammation.
Deficiency of sleep is also associated with a higher risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and even certain cancers.
“Mood disorders such as depression and anxiety are also associated with chronic insomnia and sleep deprivation,” Foldanvary-Schaefer said.
Although the term “sleep divorce” sounds like a trouble in heaven, Kosla says it can actually bring couples closer.
“When our sleep is damaged by a destructive partner, dissatisfaction grows,” she explains. “Deficiency of sleep also leads to less empathy, patience and understanding.”
In addition to more sleep, some married couples reported that sleeping separately actually improved their sex life.
“When a couple gets enough uninterrupted retreat sleep, they are more likely to feel emotionally and physically connected,” Ali said.
Kosla said the key to a successful sleep divorce is communication.
She explained that each partner must express their needs and needs clearly, and the couple needs to intentionally spend a good time together before retreating to a separate bed.
“Having thoughtful conversations with bed partners, rather than fostering a poorer sleep environment, can also lead to stronger relationships, as each partner can achieve a quieter sleep,” Khosla said.
