Forgiveness and Escalation – Sexual and Relationship Healing

We cannot discover new lands without leaving the coast.

If you’re having trouble understanding how sex and porn addiction escalate, think of heroin addiction as an analogy. No one goes out and shoots heroin. Instead, heroin addicts smoke marijuana or abuse prescription drugs to relieve their symptoms. Over time, their tolerance increases and their corresponding habits escalate. Maybe they start smoking marijuana around the clock, or they start grabbing handfuls of pills. Ultimately, even this won’t allow them to reach or maintain the high level they want. At some point, they “discover” harder drugs like heroin, which they use to get the same high they used to. At first, they might just sprinkle a little heroin into a joint, or mix a little heroin into a pill they learn to crush and snort (for a faster onset of action). Then, before they know it, and without making a conscious decision, they start cooking and injecting their new drug of choice. As sex and porn addicts, our behavior escalates in the exact same way.
