Flipper Zero electronic device can control sex toys, safety issues face challenges

Flipper Zero is a small but powerful geeky electronic device that poses a security challenge to the adult sex toy industry. An experiment conducted by researchers Luca Bongiorni and Matteo Mandolini demonstrated how Flipper Zero can control a Bluetooth-enabled sex toy.

After Flipper Zero was shown to be capable of sending Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) spam to Apple mobile devices, two researchers launched an experiment to see if it could be used to manipulate adult sex toys. They set their sights on the popular sex toy app “Love Spouse,” which has been downloaded more than 500,000 times on Google Play.

The Love Spouse app controls the toy’s on/off modes and vibrations by sending data packets. As with all Bluetooth and TCP/IP communications, these packets are sent by the sender and captured by the recipient. In order to bypass the users’ connection threshold, the researchers used the nRF Connect app and successfully intercepted these broadcast packets. Once the experiment was successful, the researchers developed an app on Flipper Zero to copy these packets.

It replicates the capability of an infrared (IR) remote control, and in addition to controlling sex toys, it can also control devices such as televisions and audio systems, and even open garage doors. Additionally, it can capture and record electromagnetic signals coming from the car’s key fob, although these signals are often not strong due to the limitations of the car’s security system.
