FF: The power of choice

FF: The power of choice

A full 20% of my posts have I choose Label. Obviously, I think it’s a big deal.

The power of choice is powerful, and using it wisely can make your life better. Some thoughts on options:

  • We often have more choices than we think. For various reasons, we tend to have tunnel vision and see only two options when we have many options, or only a few of the options we actually have.
  • We are often given less than all options. People try to control and manipulate us by providing limited choices; Don’t be fooled!
  • Life is full of false dichotomies. Learning to question two answer choices is one of the smartest things you can do.
  • Wrong assumptions limit our choices. Our assumptions may lead us to believe that there are no options, or that we will be rejected.
  • Not choosing is actually making a choice, especially if you know what will happen if you don’t choose, or if you don’t choose, you leave the choice to someone else. In other words, abdication is an option, but a very bad one.
  • Doing nothing is an option, and sometimes a very good one.
  • Making immediate choices without necessity often leads to poor choices. It is always wise to take time to think/pray/sleep. If it’s a big decision, it’s also a good idea to seek the wisdom of others.
  • What was a good choice in the past may now be a poor or poor choice. Recheck your choices regularly.
  • Once we choose, pride prevents us from changing. Being able to say “I was wrong” and change course is a sign of maturity and confidence.
  • Some choices are beyond our reach, and we cannot choose things that require action from others unless they are willing to do what we want to do.
  • Our choices have a profound impact on others, especially those closest to us. Your choices can help or hurt your wife, and they can open or close doors for her.

The bottom line is that choice is a very powerful tool, for both good and bad. Choose often, and choose well.
