Where to live

To make the most of your stay, please be in the middle of Kochi. The city center area around Harimayabashi and Kochi Stations has the best access to attractions, restaurants and transportation. From here you can easily walk to landmarks like Gochi Castle and Hirome Market, while a bus or car rental will take you further to the rivers and beaches of Kochi.

Day 1: Kochi’s History and Spirit

Morning: Kochi Castle

Traveling began at Kochi Castle, one of the few remaining pristine castles in Japan, which is still intact. Walkable ground, climbing roads and main city views are perfect for understanding the land’s situation and gradually returning to the warrior era. While you are there, consider stopping at Kochi Castle History Museum to gain a deeper understanding of the history of the area.

If you happen to be in town on Sunday, be sure to check out the Kochi Sunday Market. One of Japan’s largest outdoor markets, extending to 1.3 km, ending at the foot of Kochi Castle.

Noon: Hirome Market

Just a few steps from the castle is Kochi’s buzzing food hall Hirome Market. Watch supplier preparation かったこだきたいます (Bonito burned with straw) and enjoy it with other local dishes like breasts or ramen. Take a communal table and soak in a joyful festive atmosphere.

Afternoon: Directory Temple and Markino Marijuana Garden

After lunch, head to the 31st stop of Shikoku 88 Shikoku in Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, Godai. Strolling along the mossy road and admiring the five-story vermilion pagoda framed by maple trees is especially breathtaking in autumn. On the way back to the coast, stop on Katsurahama Beach, one of Takakochi’s victorious attractions, there is a rugged shore along the strong waves. Despite the ban on swimming, the scenery is so breathtaking that it is even described as “Yosakoi Bushi” in the famous Kochi Song. The beach park also wore a statue of Sakamoto Ryoma, a famous reformer, to make their photos stay.

Evening: Back to Kochi City

Return to Kochi City and spend your last night. Have your last dinner on Hirome Market or try a fancy restaurant specializing in high-profile and local freshwater eels. This is the perfect way to grilled whirlwind tour through Shikoku, South.
