Archaeologists have discovered a multi-faceted geometric mosaic floor in a gallo-roman house overlooking the hills in southern France. The mosaics are filled with crosswords in the form of white and black Tesserae, with rare painted ornaments in crimson and yellow. It dates back to the 1st century BC
A team from the French National Institute of Prevention and Archaeology (INRAP) is digging the steep slopes of the Hermitage Mountain before building the housing development. The excavation has revealed a 40,000 square footage since its start in February, revealing four old residential parts built into rocks and a small cemetery.
The remains of the residence are well preserved, proving the architectural characteristics of its buildings. The inner wall is covered with clay to permeate water containing carved limestone reservoirs. Weak mural traces can be seen on the clay coating. The water management system is enhanced on the stone layer of the drainage layer through underground tiles. The floors of these houses are made of limestone slabs or lime concrete, with a layer of stone and limestone powder on them.
One of the buildings was originally made of stone and defeated the earth, and was later remodeled with concrete adorned with mosaics. The multichromosomal mosaic is a central panel on the floor of space with dimensions of 15 x 12.5 feet.
Around this carpet, the two parts are entirely made of white tess, with no pattern to raise questions about the function of the room: are they wall cor or special arrangements designed to build benches or specific furniture? Finally, one side of the sidewalk has a pattern of a white cross on a black background, which may indicate the location of the opening, possibly the door leading to another room. Ongoing research aims to elucidate the organization of the building and to confirm whether it is indeed the doomsday, a Roman urban house that is usually occupied by wealthy families.
On the east side of the building, archaeologists unearth rainwater drains made of amphibians, cut at the ends and nesting with each other.
A cemetery was discovered to the south by residential archaeologists whose tombs date from the mid-5th to the late 6th century. The head of the deceased was buried in the west, on a coffin or on a wooden board. Some have stone covers. No grave.
Despite the discovery of such important archaeological materials, new developments will continue. The mosaic floor will be lifted, restored and displayed. The city has decided to create a specially built exhibition area to permanently accommodate the mosaic.
