Embracing Emotional Maturity: The Calling of the Christian Husband

Yesterday I said that a lot of bad marital behavior is the result of people seeking attention and/or respect from their spouses. Then I tell you to give your wife more attention and respect as if you are the only one who is guilty.

I have no doubt that most of you need more attention and respect from your wives. But you tell her this is unlikely to lead to a positive outcome. I’m talking to you and you can change you, so I focus on that.

Another thing that comes into play here is that when both partners in a couple need to change, the one who takes action is the more emotionally mature one. Less mature spouses wait for the other person to take action and then react to what the other person does.

I call on you to become the more emotionally mature person in your marriage. In other words, grow up! As someone who believes in leadership, I don’t think we have a choice in this. As the husbands God has called us to be, we need to relentlessly pursue emotional maturity.

If you want to take this seriously, I suggest you read Emotionally Healthy Spirituality: The Impossibility of Being Spiritually Mature While Remaining Emotionally Immature. I have read this book twice over the past ten years and will soon be reading it a third time with our life group. It’s challenging, but if you work at it, you’ll grow a little bit. Or maybe a lot. This will be great for your marriage!
