Chie Hayakawa’s Renoir competes in Cannes Palme d’Or

A Story of Resilience and Adult

In 1987, in the suburbs of Tokyo, Renoir It is an adult drama about puberty and family struggles. The film comes after 11-year-old Fuki, whose father Keiji is fighting a terminal illness. “My intention was to make a movie, which shocked my own emotions more than anything else,” Hayakawa said. “The first thing that came to my mind was my personal experience, a young man who got sick with his father and eventually died of cancer.”

While Fukushima’s story and the plot around it are fictional, Haekawa’s childhood will bring the theme of the film’s line color. “The vague fear and inward gui, the breadth of imagination, and the innocent awe of the fine works of art are drawn from my own youthful emotions,” she explained.

“If I tried to write this in my 20s, the story would be even more poor and conceited. Now, as I was close to my parents’ age as a kid, I could vividly be associated with loneliness.
