Late bronze objects used to filter beverages were found in Hadrianopolis in the Black Sea region of northern Türkiye. The filter was discovered during the 2024 excavation season, which dates back to the 5th century AD
The filter is 3.2 inches long, with a slender conical shape and is covered along its length. It has a suspension ring on top, indicating that it is a valuable property to wear inside the body, easy to use, and wear patterns show a lot of use.
It works with a long straw made from hollow stems of a plant like a reed or a crutch. The filter will be connected to the end of the straw inside the beverage. And draw the liquid through conical perforations. Drinks are often shared among several people. Large bowls will be placed in the middle of the group, and they will use natural straws such as reeds and crutches that can grow up to three feet to eliminate their thirst.
There is a lot of agricultural activity on the island of Hadriano in the 5th century. Archaeologists have found evidence of cultivation of pears, apples, pomegranates, grapes, barley, wheat and bitter taste. These ingredients produce a wide variety of beverages – juices, wines, other fermented beverages, which may be rotten, muddy, slimy or tough.
The discovery of this cutlery confirms that residents of Hadriapolis not only have access to a variety of agricultural products, but also have developed technologies that allow them to enjoy these products in a more refined and healthier way, [Karabük University Archaeology professor] Dr. Çelikbaş stressed.
