Kalina Marie and her husband Shane were expecting a beautiful wedding and had friends and family cheering them on as they walked into the reception, but what they got was every couple A newlywed’s nightmare.
A heartbroken Mary took to TikTok to share the devastating reality of her journey to an almost empty venue.
The bride and groom walked hand in hand into the richly decorated hall with stoic expressions as they tried to come to terms with what had happened as a handful of people could be seen celebrating with them.
Miley Cyrus’ melancholic cover of “When I Look at You” was their opening song, with the eerie lyrics “When my world is faded” It reflects the situation they faced bravely.
“This is the entrance to our costume party,” Mary, from Oregon, wrote in the caption of her video, which has been viewed more than 7 million times.
“I’ve been talking about masquerade for the past 10 months. Not only did I digitally invite over 75 people to the same ball. I also paid to send out 25 beautiful invitations.
“Five people showed up!!!!!!! Like, are you kidding me!?!? As you can see in the video, we entered the venue. No one was there. The invitation said 1 p.m. “At 1:15pm my mom messaged me that no one was there. My husband and I finally showed up at 2 o’clock at a venue that was supposed to hold 40 people.”
She said she had a “dream” that she would walk into a crowd of people “cheering” for them.
However, she eventually had to “man up” because she “didn’t know” how to deal with the nearly empty venue.
“All the wasted food and drink,” Mary continued. “All the tables and chairs were empty. Every moment of my reception it was changing to suit.”
Despite the disappointing turnout, Mary said she wasn’t going to let absent guests ruin her special day.
She explained that they still made the most of it, sharing clips of the dance floor with the few people who showed up and the moment she and her husband danced for the first time.
“It made me think, why? What did we do? Am I such a bad person? What did my husband do to deserve this?” she asked.
“Why aren’t we important enough for people to show up?”
She revealed she felt “sick” that she still had “friends” who didn’t even text her to congratulate her or tell her why she wasn’t coming.
“Honestly, I still can’t wrap my head around it.”
Hundreds of thousands of TikTok users commented on the video, confused as to how something like this could have happened.
Some even question whether there is another side to the story.
One comment, which received 15,000 likes, read: “This makes my heart hurt for you.”
“How can people reply ‘yes’ and then not show up?” asked another confused user.
“Were they just invited to the reception and not the ceremony?” someone else asked, adding that the guests might just view the move as a “money grab.”
Thousands of people tried to liven up the atmosphere, praising Mary’s beauty and vowing to attend a re-scheduled wedding.
“No, do it again. We all showed up,” read the top comment.
“Let’s do it all over again. This time invite me and the rest of us. We’ll show up and exit. I love you beautiful and congratulations!!” someone else wrote.
Mary and her husband got engaged on Christmas Day 2019, just before the COVID-19 pandemic “stopped everything.”
As a result, wedding preparations were postponed until this year.
The couple, who have been together for nine years, announced their wedding date in January and are eagerly anticipating their long-awaited special day.
A week ago, she shared an update in another video, admitting that she and her husband are “still a little awkward, still going through the stages of grief” and “still dealing with anger.”
“I wouldn’t wish this on even my worst enemy,” she said.
