BDSM paddles are usually included in most beginner kink kits – but these are cheap. There are so many paddles out there; different materials, styles and designs. There is something for everyone.
But if you’re new to paddles or looking to expand your collection, here’s a quick overview of how to decide which model is best for you and your partner.
Know Your Budget
As with any purchase, you need to know how much you can spend. For example, you might drool over a handmade cherry wood paddle, but your wallet will only let you buy a plastic one.
The good news is that your main goal with paddleboarding is the “feel,” not just the look—so if you want something that stings like a million bees or gets deep into your muscles, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get it.
Decide on the feeling
Percussive play creates two sensations—”tingling” and “popping.” The tingling sensation is felt on the surface of the skin. The popping sensation goes deep into the tissue.
Paddles are usually the ones that make the rumble, but you can also get paddles that sting.
How do you know what you’re getting?
Keep this in mind…
- prick = Smaller, narrower, lighter, more flexible
- boom = Larger, heavier, more rigid
After that, you need to consider the material – this will further change the feel of the toy…
Decide on the material
LVXsupply.com has some great wooden paddles
Acrylic and Plexiglas – It looks like plastic (but it’s not) and can cause a strong stinging sensation. The stinging sensation can also vary depending on flexibility, thickness, and density.
bamboo – Lightweight and easy to handle, but can cause a lot of damage (sting)!
fur – The core of the racket will be harder (usually plastic or multiple layers of faux leather), but the outer layer will be softer and more compliant. Great for warming up or beginners.
Glass – This may seem a little scary, but a well-made glass paddle (or any adult product) will not shatter. Just make sure there are no weak spots in its construction or severe stress points within the glass.

Aramid fiber – Yes, the stuff in bulletproof vests. It has almost no shock absorption, so it stings, stings, stings! However, it is not a common material and is more expensive than most other paddles. You may also be able to find it on carbon fiber (Similar to Kevlar, at least for BDSM purposes).
leather – Considered a traditional BDSM material. Wood (or other hard material) is duller if it is wrapped in leather. Paddle manufacturers do this either to save costs or to create a different feel than pure leather.
Lexon – It’s like a tougher, more expensive version of acrylic glass. It’s also available in different levels of flexibility and density, and it’s sometimes used as bulletproof glass, for example.
plastic – Compared to other materials, it is less dense and can be very stinging.
eraser – Not for beginners or the faint of heart. It’s generally a thumping tool, but can cause great pain (and, if you don’t know what you’re doing, damage).
Silicone – Smooth and soft, but very flimsy. It’s also very easy to clean/sterilize – a good choice if you’re heading into a dungeon or playing with multiple buddies.
Stainless steel – Ridged and very hard, and dense. Can be very painful. Not for beginners.
wood – Different types of wood have different densities and therefore different shock absorption properties. Some woods are also chosen for their appearance. Add in carving and staining/painting and the options become endless.
example
Large, round, hard bamboo – Most of these elements will give you a thumping sensation, but bamboo is a very light, very stingy material. So if (1) is a full thump and (10) is the deepest thump, we get around 6/7 with a mix of sensations.
Thin wood, with holes – Wood absorbs shock, so the ball makes a deep, thumping sound. But the thinner the wood, the harsher the sound. Also, the holes reduce air resistance, which makes the ball go faster.
Stainless steel, round, thick – A thump similar to (10). This combination is also dangerous because it can cause considerable damage in the wrong hands.
Adding Elements
Besides material and shape, there are other factors that make your paddle unique.
- Hole – Easier to use and hits harder.
- Word/Name – Name/title, slut, XOXO, etc. on top or bottom.
- picture – An image carved or burned into a material.
- Wristband – More secure to hold, but can be a bit awkward.
- Spikes – Tiny vampire spikes or larger metal bumps.
- Shocking news – Some propellers may produce an electric shock effect.
- Additional pieces – Extra layers of paddle material can add extra “slap” or harder hitting power.
- Texture – Whether it was cut into the blade or extra material stuck to the surface, a rope was found running through the blade.
There are more than that – I’ve even seen glittery ones. So take your time, do some research, and find something you like! Plus, if you’re really strapped for cash, there are plenty of things around the house that can work – as long as it’s flat, large, and sturdy.
