Meeting on a dating app isn’t a dilemma.

A study published in the journal Social Science suggests that people who meet on a dating app can have romantic relationships that are just as strong as meeting them face-to-face.

Researchers examined the relationship experiences of 233 college students to determine whether the way couples met affected the quality of their relationships.

In the end, they found no significant difference whether building a relationship online or in person.

“The results of this study show that there are no statistical differences in relationship satisfaction based on how people form relationships,” study author Mickey Langless, an assistant professor in the Department of Human Sciences and Design at Baylor University, told PsyPost.

“Satisfaction levels for meeting current (and former) partners in person were similar compared to those who met their partners through dating apps.”

In today’s digital age, most couples meet online, with one report finding that the majority of users (63%) create dating profiles with the intention of forming a serious relationship.

However, some people still feel ashamed about how they met – and some couples even lie about how they met.

“I think people are embarrassed [that] Dating expert Talia Koren previously told The Washington Post that “they are looking for true love” and that even dressing up in real life is intentional.

But that awkwardness seems to be disappearing as swiping through dating apps is now the norm for most singles.

“In the process of revising this article, the negative stigma surrounding dating apps appears to have diminished, and the results of this study help explain why people are less likely to view dating apps as taboo or embarrassing,” said Langleys explain.

However, the researchers note that only a limited group was surveyed and that college students may have different views on dating apps than the general public – online dating has always been more common among younger generations.

So whether your first words are printed or spoken out loud, you’re likely to live happily ever after.
