Anonymous jar cemetery discovered in Sardinia – History

Anonymous cemeteries from the 4th to 3rd centuries BC were found in the gas pipeline project in Sestu, Sadinia. So far, six amphibians containing orthopedic relics have been unearthed, possibly very young children.

These are called burial in modern academic scholarships from something derived from (in Greek “putting newborns in clay pots”). From 8 BC to the Roman Empire era, it was a wide and lasting funeral throughout the Mediterranean world. The burial of embryos was found in anonymous settlements from the second half of the 6th century BC to the early 4th century BC, and the punitive practice was to cut the amphibians in half lengthwise, place the dead inside, and then install the cut half on the sarcophagus cover. If they are burying adults, two amphibians will be cut off on the shoulders and cut vertically to accommodate larger bodies.

The first amphibian in Sestu was discovered by gas utility crews in early February, which was dug in the ditch that paved the road. They called together archaeologists who directed the architecture, and they triggered the formal excavation of the site of the discovery. Anonymous expert archaeologist Enrico Trudu, from Cagliari Archaeology Supervision, is leading the excavation.

“Some of them [the six amphorae] We have recovered human bones and found bones everywhere around us. The context is undoubtedly the funeral. We are going to investigate a pit because we start at the most exposed point and then we will expand into the entire ditch. “So, even if this discovery is not entirely unexpected, the site can still retain many surprises. “The area is not far from Moriscau, where archaeological settlements are already restricted, so it’s very likely that something interesting is expected here, too,” Trudu explained. “However, large-scale excavation activities seem impossible. Experts concluded: “The ditches are within the road and are surrounded by industrial and commercial warehouses. “It is impossible to study the entire cemetery, but it is important to analyze and protect the parts and ensure the parts are already revealed, and to understand what can be found in future public works. ”

Currently, the site is being protected by police and videos to prevent possible predators from interfering with it. When archaeologists completed excavation of the ditches, gas works continued in another area.
