A huge area of marble pavement was found in Agora, an ancient city of magnesium, near the Aegean coast of Türkiye. The uninterrupted sidewalk covers an amazing 10,000 m2 (2.5 acres).

Agora’s marble floor survives such a special condition because the quake causes the winding river to rupture its banks, it is covered with deposited silt. Archaeologists excavated 13 feet of filling before reaching the building structure below it.

Agora is the main square for citizens to participate in urban politics, religion and business life. Magnesium Agora has been conducted regularly since 2021. So far, less than half of the 10,000 square feet found in Agora. It is one of the largest farmers in the ancient Mediterranean and the best preserved one.

Among other things, they are used as government archives. Nearly 200 inscriptions were found in excavations in only two relatively small areas.

[Excavation Director Assoc. Prof. Dr.] Coke Dimir stressed that Agra is the “heart of the city” and they hope to reveal many inscriptions. “Think of this place, not a shopping place, we call it the state agora or the sacred agora, but a huge complex that houses the heart and soul of the city, as well as the knowledge of the past that spreads to the future. In other words, memory of the city is in this structure the information in Agora that we are very important.”

Kökdemir added that as the excavation is completed, they will receive important information from Anatolia in the west.
