An ancient dream in the Sea of Japan
Tucked away on the coast of Japan, Totori Prefecture is perhaps the most spectacular and surprising hidden gem in Japan. It’s like entering another world, in a fantasy landscape, the tradition of centuries of history remains uninterrupted.
With its breathtaking terrain, fabulous heritage, atmospheric ruins and tranquil spa village, Tottori is a place that feels more dreamy than a typical travel destination, a typical travel destination – a typical beauty and living tradition.
Spectacular sand dunes and the ruins of the rich castle
Totori Dunes (the most iconic landmark in the prefecture) are nothing else in Japan. They change violently, constantly changing, and they roll sharply towards the sea, forming a film, almost surreal landscape, with light and seasons changing.
On the eastern edge of the dunes is the Beach Museum, an indoor museum, and the only museum in the world dedicated to sand sculpture. It has large-scale works created by international artists and introduces a new theme every year – from ancient civilizations to modern cultural idols.
A little inland, you will find another most eye-catching attraction: the ruins of Totori Castle, rising from the hillside above Totori city. When dusk falls, the stone road leading to the ruins glows with warm light, creating a dreamy and seductive atmosphere.
Sacred stories and traditions of life
Tottori is full of legends and traditions. It is the location of Hakuto Shrine, a coastal sanctuary that is closely linked to one of Japan’s oldest love stories, the legend of White Rabbit in Inaba. Until today, those seeking love and luck come here to offer prayers.
The spirit of Tottori can also be felt in its traditional handicrafts and the beautiful performing arts that continue to thrive in the region. The glittering spin of the Inaba umbrella dance evokes images of summer festivals and centuries-old celebrations. Kirin-Jishi Mai is a vibrant folk dance with fabulous creatures that combine elements of lions and giraffes to drive away evil and bring good luck.
Inshu Washi is a high-quality handmade paper dating back to more than 1,000 years and is still produced using traditional technology. From calligraphy and interior design to contemporary art and stationery, this lasting craft is still in full use.
Magic doesn’t end here. Tottori is also known for hot springs. From the conveniently serene country setting of Tottori Onsen to Yoshioka Onsen, Hamamura Onsen and Shikano, everyone offers a unique experience filled with local charm and warm hospitality.
